Mamo Mihretu is the present governor of the central bank of Ethiopia. was also known as the chief executive officer of Ethiopian Investment Holdings, Ethiopia’s Sovereign Wealth Fund geared at creating generational wealth through strategic investments, resilient portfolios, and professional management of resources.

He was born in the year 1988 and he will be 35 years old in 2023.

Mamo served as a Senior Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, in addition to that he also served as the Chief Trade Negotiator in the same period of time. Before his service to the Ethiopian government, he has also worked with the world bank group in Nairobi Kenya as the Private Sector Specialist, joining the administration of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. During the time he worked at the World bank group, he was in charge of the implementation of various programs in the group, including those for trade logistics, tax simplification, business regulation, and investment promotion.

Mamo Mihretu was born and raised by his parents in his home country Ethiopia. He has also lived most of his childhood living in his home country and he also attended Schools in Ethiopia where he acquired some of his education before leaving the country for his higher education. After his first degree, he taught as a lecturer at St. Mary’s university college. As a lecturer at the college, he Chaired the Department of Law, where he taught courses on Commercial Law, Labour Law, and International Law, in addition, he was also the head of the department of law at that time.

Mamo completed his basic Education at a local school located in his town. After completing his basic Education proceeded to his higher education.

Mamo Mihretu is known to be a well-trained attorney who boasts many academic credentials. He acquired his first-degree education at the Addis Ababa university where he studied and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in law (LLB). He later attended the University of Pretoria where he again acquired a master’s degree certificate in law (LLM), focusing on trade and investment.

Mamo Also attended the Universiteit van Amsterdam where acquired a Diploma in International Trade and Investment and then Harvard Kennedy School where acquired a Master of Public Administration – MPA focusing on Public Administration/Leadership from 2008 to 2009.

Mamo Mihretu’s career started off as a Principal Attorney and Lead Trade Negotiator to the Ethiopian ministry of trade; his work was mostly geared toward Advising the Ethiopian Ministry of Trade and Cabinet on WTO accession, bilateral trade agreements, and other trade policy issues. But before then, he first worked as a lecturer and the head of the department at St Mary’s University College’s department of law. 

Mihretu also worked as a principal at the Africa group LLC; a research and advisory firm focused on bringing clients cutting-edge insight to guide their investment and business decisions in Africa. He worked with them for a period of one year and some months starting from (Feb 2008 – march 2009) before moving to the world bank group in 2010 where he worked as a senior program manager for the group for a period of seven years starting from (Aug 2010 to Feb 2022) before he was appointed the Senior Policy Advisor and Chief Trade Negotiator to the prime minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed.

After 3 years and 6 months of working as the Senior Policy Advisor and Chief Trade Negotiator to the prime minister of Ethiopia, he was then appointed the Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopia Investment Holdings (Ethiopia’s Sovereign Wealth Fund). Its mandate is to create generational wealth through strategic investments, resilient portfolios, and professional management. It aims at blending its local assets with best-in-class international partners and investors.

In January 2023 again the Ethiopian prime minister appointed Mamo Mihretu as the country’s new central bank governor, Abiy’s office said in a statement posted on Twitter on Friday, 20th of January he was appointed as a replacement to Yinager Dessie the former governor, who served as central bank governor since 2018.
